Celebrating Air Max day with artistic retail environment design
Air Max Day is a pretty big deal around these parts. It’s a celebration of the release of the very first Air Max shoe, so it’s understandably a huge part of Nike history. We partnered with Livestock on Spadina, turning the entire store’s layout into a colourful, pop-art inspired sneaker heaven designed to mimic three specially-created Air Max designs. Nike had tapped three top designers to put their unique spin on the Air Max, drawing from the worlds of shoes, art, and fashion. Nike legend Tinker Hatfield, designer and musician Hiroshi Fujiwara, and Nike CEO Mark Parker all created a one-off sneaker that we wanted to showcase.

Colourful pop-art store concept design from the inside out
In honour of the very first Air Max and its Georges Pompidou-inspired ‘inside out’ design, we created an urban-inspired space that brought the inside to light. For our in-store design we installed over a kilometer of colourful PVC piping throughout the space, leading the eye to the large Air Max logo at the back of the store. These pipes acted both as wayfinders and thematic beacons, since they were in three colours associated with each of the three designs. We also created three separate custom in-store displays inspired by each shoe, featuring kinetic elements and multiple-layers to create 3D experiences.

We built three custom pedestals for each shoe, lit with a rechargeable lighting system we created so they could be free-standing. Nike had also commissioned a street artist to create a series of canvasses, so we created a gallery space to showcase all his designs. To extend the experience, we sent every visitor home with a customized ‘This is My Air Max’ print and apparel. This installation took our crews a full 24 hours to install, and a full 24 to tear down, returning the store to its original state. But, considering what a successful celebration of Air Max day it turned out to be, we think it was totally worth it.
